This follows the NCERT Class 5 chapter "We the Travellers - II". Line up the digits (ones under ones, tens under tens), and regroup 10 of one place as 1 of the next. If 462 + 839 = 1,301 then 1,301 - 839 = 462. To subtract 99, take away 100 and add 1. The sum of 5 consecutive numbers is 5 times the middle number.
