Seeing without Seeing
Little Onshangla came home from school. She opened the door quietly and kept her bag on the table quietly. Her mother, Ava, looked at her. “You are very quiet today,” said Ava. “Did anything happen at school?” “Yes, Ava,” said Onshangla. “A new boy came to our class. The teacher helped him sit at the front desk. He wears black glasses. He cannot see. How will he do things?” “Finish your biscuits and milk,” said Ava. “Then we will play a new game.” Ava tied a scarf over Onshangla's eyes. Ava held a rose. Onshangla touched it. “It is something soft… a flower!” she said. She smelled it. “It is a rose!” Then Ava shook a small bell. Trin… trin… “I can hear it,” said Onshangla. “It is the bell!” Next Ava held a glass. Onshangla touched it and put one finger in it. “A glass of water!” she said. She tasted it. “Oh! It is not water. It is orange juice.” Ava took off the scarf. Onshangla blinked and looked at her. “I see you, Ava!” she shouted with joy. “If a child cannot see, there are other ways of finding out things,” said Ava. “I hope all of you will be friends with the new boy.”

Note for Parents & Teachers
This follows the NCERT Class 2 English lesson Seeing without Seeing (Mridang): Onshangla meets a new boy who cannot see, and Ava plays a guessing game with a scarf using touch, smell, hearing and taste; the eye-care tips; the new words quiet, front, sniff, remove, joy and blink; and the vowel sound o (an ox, an otter, an orange; a fox, a dot, a top). The words are a short retelling of the textbook story. Talk about how people who cannot see find out about things, and be kind and helpful to them.
